NOMADIC IDEAS

The caravan is the icon of historical as well as contemporary mobility; it means freedom and at the same time comfort, adventure and security. I feel that a revival of this compact dwelling will influence interiors and fashion – I have actually just launched my fashion forecast for summer 2014, inspired by nomadic ideas; this preview is currently available through our Trend Union agents, while I look forward to presenting my full range of trend books in Paris during Première Vision. Also this September, I am creating a nomadic installation for Mohair South Africa at Maison & Objet. Our relationship with the earth is becoming a source of inspiration and reflection for the youngest designers and decorators, giving shape to more archaic design and more tribal interiors. Loom-woven mohair rugs and mats will cover the floor, raised slightly by scattered cushions, thin mattresses and small ottomans. Heavy textiles will become tent canopies and looser weaves draped as billowing curtains. Ceramics and hammered metals will be used for rustic tabletop and small side-tables, while stripes will be studied for rugs and blankets to keep us warm on brisk nights. Anatolian Filikli rugs from Altai in Milan (like the one shown here) and gaufrage velvets from Schellens that I have helped re-edit will both make a comeback, adding a wilder dimension and textural depth to mohair’s lustrous shine.
